As one of the largest ethnic groups on the Canadian prairies, Ukrainians have had a significant impact on the region's social, cultural and economic development. In recognition of this legacy, in 1972 a group of eleven prominent professional and business members of the Ukrainian community dedicated themselves to the establishment of a facility for the preservation of the history and culture of Canadians of Ukrainian heritage. Through the efforts of these visionaries, the Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta (UCAMA) was created.
UCAMA is moving forward with an exciting relocation project that will preserve the rich and diverse Ukrainian Canadian experience for generations to come. Currently UCAMA is seeking funds to move their operations to the historic Lodge Hotel and Brighton Block, located in Edmonton's Downtown East district.
UCAMA's goal is to create a community facility which will house exhibition galleries; an archive and library resource area; collection storage areas; education, meeting and special programming areas and more.
Your credit union has made a generous $100,000 donation in support of UCAMA's new museum. In addition, we are accepting donations from the public on behalf of UCAMA at each of our 42 service locations.
UCAMA needs your support to grow in the future. It has already secured a $3 million investment from the City of Edmonton, and $3 million in provincial grants from the Alberta Lottery Fund in support of the project and continues to seek partners. No matter how large or small, each donation is significant to the successful implementation of this exciting project.
Though the collection is based in Edmonton, it is UCAMA's hope that the new facility will become a national destination due to the quality and breadth of the collection and the stories it tells.
